Most men are so busy in today’s world that they have little time for discipleship training or for a Bible study. Some have a hard enough time even getting to church regularly. Here are two strategic principles for helping men get spiritually fed in our fast-paced world.
1. Drive Time Audiobooks
Make specific suggestions to them about audiobooks they can get to help them with their spiritual responsibilities and spiritual struggles. Las week, I was having breakfast with a Millennial, who said to me, “Whenever a book is recommended to me, the first thing I do is find out if it is in audiobook.” Although more men are working from home than ever before, the vast majority commute and would respond to listening to a book that will help them grow in Christ.
Cory Verner, the director of ChristianAudio.Com, told me a surprising secret. Although seventy percent of Christian books are read by women, MORE men than WOMEN buy audiobooks!
Here are the links to a few books at Christianaudio.com that I would recommend (Audio books like Time Keller’s, The Meaning of Marriage and The Reason for God are available elsewhere.)
The Five Love Languages for Men by Gary Chapman
Tender Warrior by Stu Weber
Love and Respect by Emerson Eggerichs
Man Alive by Pat Morley
Got Your Back by Gary Yagel
2. The Second Way to Disciple Busy Men: A Concentrated Saturday Morning Seminar.
Men will be better equipped to walk closely with Christ, winsomely defend their faith, make biblical business decisions, and lead their homes effectively through a 3 hour Saturday morning seminar than through 5 books—because the vast majority of men will never get around to reading the books. Not only that, but a seminar in their local church gives them a chance to deepen their friendships with the men in their church—and find out they are not the only ones who struggle!
Here is a little bit about two seminars I lead that you may not know much about:
REAL MEN REAL RELATIONSHIPS. Christian men’s most frequent request for teaching and motivation has to do with their relationships. It is hard to stay close to Christ, overcome anger towards our wives and providing what they need from us, and knowing what he is supposed to do as the spiritual leader of the home. Here is the link to this seminar (the most popular in 2017 and 2018.)
SEXUAL DISCIPLESHIP 201. Millions of Christian men are hooked on porn for one reason: When they first started struggling with it no one equipped them with biblical principles for combating it. Don’t let this happen to the men of your church.
Porn use among committed Christians is so common that church leaders seem to have given up on helping men fight it. But that doesn’t make porn use any less destructive to the soul. Peter wrote, “Beloved, I urge you to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.” 1 Peter 2:11 But, it is always worth being equipped to FIGHT FOR YOUR HEART. God tells us in Proverbs 4:23. “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
Here is a picture of some of the content:
- Avoiding the slippery slope of regular porn use
- Overcoming the shame over lust that brings spiritual paralysis
- Understanding my part in changing what my heart craves
- Learning practical, biblical strategies for resisting, when temptation strikes
This material was presented as a seminar at the denominational meeting of the Presbyterian Church in America called the General Assembly. Here is further information about it.
